Most of them were sold by african tribes to European and Arab traders. These africans would sell the people they captured in warfare. Europeans and Arabs very rarely ventured into africa to catch africans by themselves. Typically the Arabs bought them from african tribes and sold them to Europeans or shipped them north to other islamic areas. Europeans also bought african slaves directly from the african tribal leaders.

African tribes were basically wholesalers, who sold their products to middle men who served as retailers in humans. It sounds twisted and sure was. Too bad it still occurs in a far more hidden way in the modern world.

The Slaves were sold as POWS from warring tribes. No, the Dutch traders did not run into the jungle to capture them, they were sold to them by other African tribes. That does not make it right. The USA plantations needed cheap, strong reliable labor. Slaves were the solution. Plantation owners paid good money to the slave traders because after the initial cost they were virtually free. Without that slave labor the Southern agricultural business would have never succeeded.

The slaves from the USA were taken from Africa, usually through the triangular trade because the plantation owners needed a lot of labor for tobacco, rice, indigo, and later, cotton. The slave trade was first banned in the early 1800's.
