I had been using my computer for a few hours, and I went outside. When I looked up at the full moon, there was a bright rainbow encircling it. I thought wow! and figured it must be something in the air, so thought I would watch the news on tv. Then, my neighbor's fluorescent light caught my eye, and I was seeing a rainbow around it too! It has lessened in the last few days, but I am still seeing a rainbow around my neighbor's light at night. Can't see the moon tonight at all. Any idea what is going on with my eyes?

Has the weather been cold and clear where you are?

Rings around the moon are quite common, they're usually called moon-rings or moon-bows and are caused by light reflecting off ice crystals. This doesn't just happen with the moon - it can happen with any light source including your neighbor's flourescent light.

It's similar to the way a conventinal rainbow is formed but here it's sunlight reflecting off drops of water.

the rainbow around the moon was a corona. they happen occasionaly not very rare. i'm guessing the rainbow around the light was some sort of recreation of the moons corona. or maybe im wrong. it could be that your eyes are messing up but im going to be a meterologist not an eye doctor.

Could be that your eyes are watery or irritated. When the light hits a prism or a bead of water, the light can be broken down into it's light spectrum (the rainbow you see).

Difficult to say without knowing your age and the actual status of your eyes. Why take a chance with such an important part of your body ? Why not consult an opthalmologist immediately ?
