The flag most commonly considered the Confederate Flag was actually the Northern Virginia Battle Flag (or Southern Cross) that became the battle flag for the Confederate States. The rectangular version of this is the Confederate Navy Jack. The 11 stars indicate the states of the Confederacy, plus Kentucky and Missouri. So it's technically not the Confederate Flag. Anyway, to many people in the South, the flag is a symbol of their heritage and the sacrifice made throughout the civil war. Most Southern people do not associate the flag with slavery and segregation. However, many people in the nation do. It seems to me that most of these people are not in or from the South. Unfortunately, many people in the United States seem to think that the primary issue that the Civil War was fought was slavery. (Actually, it was more about the southern states being allowed to trade freely with whomever they wanted, not only supplying the northern states. The northern states did not provide manufactured products only to the south, but provided them primarily to foreign markets.) So, although the "Confederate Flag" is offensive to some, I think that the cause of the dispute is generally misdirected.

It was hard to be a slave. No question about it. The work was hard and some owners were nothing short of brutal. (There are some reports of owners providing well for their slaves, and treating them much like, or (in a few cases) better than their own families. This was most likely though, because they did not want to spend money to replace them, and wanted the most work possible from them. Also, many slave owners used their slaves as breeding stock to make more slaves (much like a cattle rancher would with his herd today). To work without freedom is something unfathomable to most Americans today. I would say that it was harder on the slaves when they were indentured or enslaved. However, when they were freed, life was no picnic for them either. They were, for the most part, uneducated, and had no possessions, no holdings, no inheritance, nothing. They had to try to scratch out a living in a country that had seem them as less than citizens. They literally started with nothing.
Please also note that most people automatically associate slavery with African Americans alone. Though they made up the vast majority, there were also slaves from the Caribbean Islands, Native Americans, and poor Europeans as well. These people also went through the same thing as African America slaves.

For most people, it gets harder to travel for long stretches of time once you finish school and get the kind of job where you're "raking in the dough." Many jobs won't let you just take off for weeks or months and come back when you feel like it. You'll probably have more bills, more stuff to put in storage, more responsibilities that tie you down. You might also find that you start to develop more expensive tastes and habits. When I was twenty, sleeping in a cheap hostel or pensione--or on train--or on a beach---was just fine with me. I'm in my forties now, and I want a decent bed, in my own hotel room, with my own bathroom! I say, travel while you're young and relatively unburdened, if that's what you really want to do. School will always be there when you get back.

i see the confederate flag as a symbol of the south before the war...

as far as it being harder for the slaves, i wouldnt know about it...but to listen to some people nothing has gotten any easier for them...

(i didnt think we had slaves anymore) but what i am tired of hearing is how hard it is for them now because of slavery...i wasnt born then...my family heritage never owned them...but in a sense we are being blamed for it ever happening...am i a racist...no...do i agree with the comments about the confederate flag being a racist symbol...no...

1. I like the confederate flag, but don't put it above the American Flag.
2. It was harder on the slaves when they were slaves.

I think most people are racist in some form.

well the confederate flag is gone so out with the old and in with the new. as you can see it is easier now for the decendents of the slaves then it was for the slaves but if you are refering to what the freed slaves went through that is a tough one. it pretty much remained the same for them. now we have a new breed of slavory it is called minimum wage. if your boyfriend is a racist and you are still with him it sounds like you like something about him. if you truly care for him you will try to influence him in another direction. if you are happy with him for who he is then good for you.

I think the confederate flag is a show of hatered. You don't see them in the north. My parents live in Mississippi, I see plenty of them there....

Think about what the flag represents...

Think about why people still display them....

Is it power, hatred, and holding on the hatred.

2. slavery was bad.

If you think your boyfriend is a racist....he probably is...

Do you want to have racist children?

Sounds like you know right from wrong.........you need to be brave and choose non-hatred...
