I mean it's college! You SHOULD have a choice of whether you want to attend class or not. I personally am someone who works extremly well independently and can teach myself things, and so I always feel it's a waste of time to attend lectures. However, almost all my professors do not allow absences. The rule is generally 1 absence will lower your final grade by 1 whole letter, and more than 1 absence will result in a final grade of F. So basically, if someone was to decide to miss class once, and they manage to get perfect on the exams and papers (Which is highly unlikely) they will end up with a B. If they happen to get A- 's or B+'s on the exams and papers (which is more realisitc), they will get a final grade of B-, which is considered a "fail" at my school for courses within your major, and therefore you have to repeat it. My point is.....if you want to not have to repeat courses, you can't miss even 1 class meeting! How annoying is that?!

some schools have attendance policies and others don't. i went to one school for my first 2 years of college where there was a very strict university-wide attendance policy. after i transferred, i went to a school where attendance was absolutely not mandatory at all for any student - no teacher was allowed to factor attendance into the grade, unless it was for purposes of extra credit

As a university instructor, I always put material into the lecture that is not in the book. I think that the students wouldn't get their money's worth if they got the exact same material in class that they got in the book. Are you sure that you aren't learning anything in class that you could teach yourself?

The particular absence policy that you've mentioned seems pretty strict to me, but the truth is that most students really do much much better if they attend class. The professors are most likely trying to help you with this.

International students actually have requirements for how much they attend class for whether they can keep their student status and remain in the United States. So it's possible that the professors are trying to help the international students keep their requirements, too.

Actually - if you feel that way - go take classes on-line through the university of phoenix and stop you complaining. You sound silly.

Good Luck!!!
