I think because they are insecure about who they are when they are around people they do not know. And when they do not know what to say to people they act sarcastically.

Well I think for me its the humor of it and the fact that the reciever of the sarcasm has to be somewhat intelligent to get it.
I use sarcasm alot to break the mood to make things less tense. I use it quite a bit from everyone to adults to even small kids. I get tickeld when I see the kids get it...its a developemental thing.
The one thing I hate about online communications is the inabilty to use sarcasm, because it depends so much on facial expression and tone of voice.
Editing to add that by the looks of some of your responses many people dont know what sarcasm is. Oops I being insecure!

Sometimes it's hard not to be when people act stupid! If it weren't for sarcasm people would be running around screaming "Shut up, you are a complete idiot!!" all day because the world is full of people who refuse to THINK! If people would use the brain God gave them no one would NEED to be sarcastic.

I live in India & ever since we were fed on a daily diet of American humour ...all the young ppl think its cool to be sarcastic. Most of american humour is sarcasm.

Because of idiotic questions on Yahoo, especially the anti-Semitic ones. My favorite questions are the ones that accuse the Jews of controlling the banking system in the U.S. Here in the Twin Cities, I don't know one Jew who is president of a bank.
