I'm probably going to a Universtiy of California in the fall. I want to know how hard it is and how much work I have to put in compared to high school. How are the college classes compared to AP classes in high school?
Also, I would consider myself pretty crappy when it comes to writing essays and papers. How do I avoid this problem in college?

College is alot more course work than high school - but then again its alot less class time - and I think that balances out.

Good Luck!!!

I don't know about the University of California, but I do have 2 years of college experience. Let me tell you, I was really good in high school, especially in math (always got A). Then when I went to college, I almost got kicked out the first year. I failed precalculus and math used to be my best subject. You need to prepare for the difficulty you'll face in college. Study every day. If you take 5 hours of class a day, then study 5 additional hours a day (not including weekends), 1 hour for each class. Use sundays to study or work as well, but don't overload yourself. Remember to take breaks in between. If you do this, then you'll get the entire saturday free (its what I do).

As for the essays and papers, to avoid having problems, start lookig for information the same day they give you the subject. Work on it little by little, day by day, and you'll do fine. Also, in my college, theres a writing center where they offer help for writing essays. If there is one where you go, then take your draft to them and they'll look it over and give you suggestions to improve it. Make sure its done at least 2 days before you turn it in so you have time to change anything you might find wrong.

Trust me when I say that the first year will be a challenge, but from the second year forth, after your used to how things are, it will become easier. Its still hard, but very doable (I passed the precalculus class during my second year with an A). Good luck with College and I hope this helped. Remember, at the end it will all be worth it.

Easy? Hard? Those are relative terms connected directly to effort. College, in is basic sense is higher education. The major difference is that you will be the only one responsible for your own success. There will be no one getting you up for classes, asking if your homework is done, and ensuring you are spending your time wisely.

The key to succeeding in college is taking full responsibility for your actions and developing good student centered habits such as effective time management, good note taking skills, study skills, and most importantly, making good decisions. I have seen so many "good" students make bad decisions and fail out of college.

The real question is what do you want to do after college? Start answering that question by learning about careers and your personal interests. Find something you will love to do and take full responsibility and ownership of your college experience. If you do that, college will be easy!

I hope this helps!

It all depends on your high school and the courses you took there; I found that the professors always assigned me work as if their class was the only class I was taking (i.e. lots of it). I'd definitely brush up on my essay writing skills if I were you before heading to college though because you'll be writing a lot of them there.

I would suppose that depends on how hard you plan on studying!
The more you put into it the more you'll get out of it! As far as writing essays and papers - Practice always makes perfect!
Have fun!!!

College courses are much more intensive than AP courses. You will read lots (I remember weekends where I read hundreds of pages for lectures). And you can't get out of taking ENG 1A-1C, unless you tested well on the AP English exam. It is fun and rewarding though.

most universities/colleges require that students take college writing for at least 1 semester or 1 year. most schools also have a writing center that can help you become better at this very, very important skill

All my professors advise that you put in 3 hours of study for each credit hour that you are enrolled in. It really depends on how hard you party, credit load and what courses you are taking.
