for example, the Rolling Stones or U2. personally, i'm not a fan of either, and people who are fans look at me like i've just committed some major crime when i change the radio station when they come on. what is the worldwide appeal of bands like these? why is one band's music so memorable as opposed to another? (feel free to discuss other bands in your responses).

Old farts like it when bands they listened to as teens and kids are still together and making music (or noise). It's nostalgic in a way, and in another way it makes the old farts not feel so old.

Everyone has the music that they like, and noboby's taste in music is any better or any worse than anyone else's. It's all a matter of personal taste.

If you shut off the Stones or U2, I wouldn't give you a dirty look, unless you switched it to something worse, like Pink Floyd, Fergie, Club Music, or a Hip-Hop Station. If you did that, I'd have to strangle you.

In the 1980's it was 10 years. So you could hear 1970's rock in the 80's and it was classic rock. In the 1990s it was changed to 20 years, mostly because much of the same bands that were big were still big in the 1990s. Since most people can't really remember 20 years ago, I think most formats use chart lists. That's why you rarely hear the non hits by major bands. Led Zepplin and Pink Floyd have only around 4 songs each played on the radio and it's probably because those were the songs that made the top 10 in single sales at some point.

A classic band is a band whose music transcends time like the Beattles and The Rolling Stones Their music came out over 40 years ago. You can still turn on the radio and hear them today. I love U2, REM, and Van Halen too. Their music reminds me of my teenage and college days.

Classic bands are usually at least 20 years old. I knew I became old when I heard Duran Duran on a classic rock station the other day.
