i want to create the simplest os possible. my question is, other than LFS, where can i download the tools necessary to create an os. i want something that's not too time consuming or too difficult!

The very first thing you have to ask yourself is:

What is the goal of the "operating system" ?

What are its functional requirements? What h/w do you have to support? What do you mean by "simplest os"?

Or for that matter, what do you mean by "OS"? (I know this seems like a silly question, but really...what is an "OS"? Does it include interaction with a NIC? with a modem? with a joystick? does it include GUI? a browser? a shell? yada-yada-yada...)

LFS is not going to give you a "simple OS". The kernel is extremely advanced and very fully featured.

I once played around Puppy Linux, they were experimenting with customizer Live CD toolkit at the time.
