I would download Windows Defender and get rid of Spybot S&D as it is junk. Ad-aware is a decent program but it does not pick up a lot of the malware that is out there. You can keep it if you like but Windows Defender is sufficient.

I guess I'm the dissenting voice here...as a techie, I've seen a number of conflicts on XP systems with Windows Defender. On the other hand, I've not seen any problems with Spybot Search and Destroy, or Lavasoft's Ad-Aware programs. So, if it were me, I'd stick with what works.

You should never rely on just one anti-adware/spyware program, since none of them will catch every single offender. Two is the bare minimum, but it wouldn't hurt to run four or five, as long as they are trusted programs. There are a lot of spyware programs that perpetuate themselves by pretending to be anti-spyware (particularly anything that asks you to scan your system in a popup, and especially those that won't allow you to close the pop-up without agreeing to do a system scan).

Sure it is free as long as you have a valid copy of XP or Vista. Stick to antispyware programs that get good reviews. Going around downloading random antispyware programs can actually get you more spyware.

Yes. Any and all spyware scans search for different types of malicious software.
