We've lived in FL all our lives and my husband just joined the Navy. After basic training, I'll be joining him while he completes 14 weeks of job-related training in Great Lakes. So... I have a lot of questions:

1. Where are some good areas to live in relation to the base? (We will be sharing a vehicle). "Waukegan" is a town that keeps showing up on searches.

2. I have a pit bull mix. He's a mutt we adopted from the SPCA, so we don't have papers on him, but you would know he's a pit by looking at him. I don't want to have my dog seized, and I'm not familiar with other states' breed restrictions. What do I need to know? (We are taking the dog with us!)

3. In case we cannot get on-base housing, what do I need to know about apartment complexes? Are there certain management companies I should avoid?

I would appreciate information from people who do or have lived in this immediate area! I need to know the facts so I can start preparing. Thanks in advance for your answers!

He's actually in line to be a corpsman right now, but good guesses!

Thanks for the information. I know we will run into obstacles with the dog if he gets stationed overseas, but we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.

I know not to get "too settled". I'm prepared for a nomadic military life (I've dreamed of this my entire life!). I've got an optimistic outlook on the seperation aspect of this, but we're having a baby this summer, so I definitely want all of us to stay together as much as possible.

I cannot fathom not being with him for the 9 weeks of basic PLUS 14 weeks of corpsman training. So, my option if to find temporary housing up there.

Waukegan is sounding good so far!

I lived in Gurnee for 1 1/2 years and it is much, much safer than Waukegan. Waukegan is run down and has quite a lot of crime. Gurnee cost more, but is nice. Gurnee is very busy and has a lot to do. If you like a faster pace, then it is for you. There are a ton of other towns around the area, but you will have to commute. My feeling is, stay away from Waukegan and try out Gurnee, Libertyville, Round Lake, or Lindenhurst.

Sounds like you're husband is going to be an Electronic Technician or a Fire Controlman - both jobs deal with electronic repair of some of the biggest and expensive equipment in the Navy.

3. There is no on-base housing, but since you are married the military will provide money for housing costs for rent and utilities.

2. You more than likely can take your dog and won't have any problems with it provided it has proper identification for vaccinations. If your husband gets stationed overseas, you more than likely will have to give up your dog if you wish to go with him.

3. Waukegan is much better than Gurnee Mills or Great Lakes.. Great Lakes is heavy on the crime. When you do get there, I wouldn't get too settled because he will undoubtedly have to transfer somewhere else to do more schools before he finally gets transferred to his final duty station. --prepare for some trying times and good luck!
