ionic bonds are compounds between a metal and a non metal and they are formed by the loss of electrons by the metal and the non metal gains these electrons to form stable compunds.they are electrovalent in nature.they conduct electricity in a molten state and not in a normal state.eg na + cl >nacl.here na loses its electrons equal to its valency and chlorine gains these electrons.

Ionic bonds happen between at least one metal and one non-metal.

For example: Na +1 and Cl -1 --> NaCl (table salt). Metals are cations and Non-metals are considered anions. To better phrase that -- Metals want to lose their charge and non-metals want to gain a charge. The charges after they combine is zero.
