If not, has it been speeding up or slowing down?

Hubble was the scientist that determined that the universe's rate of expansion is actually INCREASING, contrary to what we would think if gravity was a force that "pulled" Some scientists think that gravity may in fact be a "pushing" force as a result. Other scientists are not sure that gravity is consistent (or the same) uniformly across the universe.

Regarding being an open or closed universe, there is nothing concrete that would support or dispute this. One theory in quantum physics is that there MAY be boundaries between universes called branes. However, again this is merely a theory.

It is really an awesome universe - isn't it?

There was a time, micro-seconds after the big bang, when the universe expanded faster than the speed of light - not the particles in it but the space itself. It slowed down after that period, called inflation.

After several billion years it now is expanding faster and faster. That's due to dark energy, which is like anti-gravity, that is speeding up the expansion of the universe. There is not enough matter in the universe to slow it down or reverse it by about 90%.

So, it will go on forever at faster speed until, billions of years from now, all you'll be able to see besides dimming stars in our galaxy is a few dimming local galaxies that go along with us.

The universe, it now seems, is expanding at an ever increasing rate. I would like to know how fast it is expanding now and what would the top speed be.

scientists believe the universe is ever expanding at a constant speed but they also believe that sometimes it expands faster and sometimes slower, and there were the slightest evidence that it really was expanding at different speeds, but it comes down to this, we don't know if the universe is expanding at all, or if it is, when it will end, some believe after the universe expands to a certain degree, it would collapse on itself, destroying everything inside, but that haven't been proven...or so I think

I'm not sure what you guys are reading, but the lastest research shows that the universe is expanding faster than ever. Hence they show the universe to be "open" and it will not collapse in on itself.

They had different groups check it, so this is pretty firm for now.

When it came into existence it had no velocity
In one thirty-billionths of a second it accelerated to the speed of light and remained there.
Eventually it will go out of existence it may or may not slow down to do it.

Has the universe always expanded at the same speed?
=========
No body know the reason of this expanding.
I know.
Action, when the God opens his palm,
have named the "Big Bang".
And action, when the God compresses his palm,
have named " a single point".
