I have purchased a home with a wood burning stove in the living room. It sits in a corner. The corner is brick on the floor under the stove and all the way up to the ceiling. The insurance company is coming to inspect the stove this week for safety, but it is new and I am not too concerned about the safety the way it is now. It is fairly clean and looks new. The previous owner put trim up at the top next to the ceiling, but did not paint it. Is it safe to paint? If so, is their a certain type that is best to use? We had a stove in our family room when I was a child, but it vented into the fireplace, so I have no experience with this situation. What advice can you give me about using the stove? If you are going to say something stupid like sell the house, go answer another question.

Yes you can paint the trim but I would suggest that you use a water based latex and not enamel.Flammable surfaces should be at least 36 inches away from the heat source and you need to make sure the chimney is clean at least once a year to prevent chimney fires.

You might check the local building codes to see what the required distance from the wall. (In our county it is 16". Also what amount of hearth or non combustable surface you need in front of the stove. Keep the sides clear also. No wood stacked around it. No kindling either. Was the stove professionally installed? If so do you know by whom and can you contact the people? Check the county regulations and you might even question insurence companies what their reccomendations are. I have had a wood stove for more than 40 years and wouldn't heat without it. You could even have the local fire department come and give you a quick pre-inspection to make any reccomendations. If they think all is okay would they write a quick note stating so? Be sure to have smoke alarms with good batteries for you inspection too.

Make sure the floor is noncombustible a good distance from the door. Fireproof rugs are an option.

Childrens plastic toys are combustible if they get to close to a hot stove. Just some other thoughts.

Should I add a fresh air vent? The house floor plan is pretty wide open, and the woodstove is in the center of the space.

try burning a fire in it and feel the area. If hot you may have to use a heat resistance paint, however they are very smelly and you may have to take the trim outside to panit. If not hot then may you have good luck shopping for a color you like and have fun painting in your new home.

Yes ma'am that's fine. You don't really have a "situation". Everything seems according to code.
