And you can't use songs written for a movie. These must be songs that were already recorded before the movie came out.

TV works, too. And the songs used in 'Lion King' were written for the movie, but I'll allow it...lol.

"Also Sprach Zarathustra" by Richard Strauss in "2001: a Space Odyssey." This music is associated so closely with the movie that a lot of people think it was written for it. (the music that plays as the prehistoric man throws the bone into the air.)

Or if you like comedy better, what about "Bohemian Rhapsody" in "Wayne's World," as everybody in the car belts out the song and bangs their heads in time to the music?

Or for romance, it's hard to beat "As Time Goes By" in "Casablanca."

The director Cameron Crowe always employs music well in his films and he gets my nod for best use of a song in the movie "Jerry Maguire." The scene is right after the sports agent Jerry (Tom Cruise) has just signed a top athlete and is driving away. He scans the radio dial attempting to find a tune to fit his mood until he lands on "Free Falling" by Tom Petty. He proceeds to belt out the lyrics and turn his steering wheel into a percussion instrument. We've all had those moments...

Here are some actually good ones. And not from teenybopper shitty movies either. With the exception of maybe 1 or 2. :-P

AMAZING ONES--
Zero 7 - "In the Waiting Line" from Garden State
Gary Jules - "Mad World" from Donnie Darko
Louis Armstrong - "Wonderful World" from Good Morning Vietnam! (when bombs are going off. pretty poignant)
Pixies - "Where is My Mind?" from Fight Club (end of movie)

Pretty good ones--
Rufus Wainwright - "Hallelujah" from Shrek
Yaz - "Only You" ...from both Can't Hardly Wait and Napoleon Dynamite
The Righteous Brothers - "Unchained Melody" from Ghost - yeah... lame as hell, but also sexy as hell.
Bill Withers - "Use Me" from American Beauty
Huey Lewis and the News - "Power of Love" from Back to the Future (well, it's an amazing song, and gets you pretty hyped for the movie at least)

A lot of good songs in Adam Sandler movies. But not really when you're talking about contextually.

Cruel Intentions, with Ryan Phillippe and Sarah Michelle-Gellar.
Song - "Bittersweet Symphony" by the Verve.

The song plays right at the end of the movie, when Sarah Michelle-Gellar gets what she deserves when all the other students in the school walk out while she's giving her speech, after they read copies of Ryan Phillipe's journal.

Greatest use? Perhaps best pairing of a song to a movie. Well for TV, "Who Are You?" by the Who for CSI is really cool.

But if you restrict it to movies, I'd can't think of one that wasn't specifically written for a movie that had well/noteworthy placement.

In the movie "Heat" there were several songs by Moby. The best, I think, was in the final scene when Al Pacino is forced to shoot Robert Deniro and then he walks over to him and holds his hand while he dies. Moby's "God Moving Over the Face of the Water" was played and it was perfect.
