i found an ad in the paper from a local nursing home offering cna classes, accepting applications. my question is, if anyone has taken this type of class thru a nursing home, how many days do you attend the class and for how long (weeks, months?), and what hours do you attend the class?

This is how I began my medical career and which led me to become an RN. I dont know if the opprotunity you have is like mine was set up, but where I began my training was a SNF (skilled nursing facility). We began with classroom training for the first two weeks then we slowly ventured onto the floors supervised for ALOT of hands on training. It was approximately a month of hands on and classroom training then we all took the state certification test together as a class at the nursing board testing center.
I think the best thing about going this route for me was the hands on training. I learn quicker when I have more hands on training than just lectures and book reading, so it was perfect for me. That was a little over ten years ago and since then I continued my education and became an RN.
The SNF's that offer this program do it as an investment for thier staffing. They train you there so you will stay with them as an employee. It doesnt mean that you HAVE to stay employed by them once your certified, but they do like to think you will. And I'm pretty sure most places like where I started pay you during training , which is a real bonus too.

There are a lot of nursing homes that would provide similar training. It's a good way to start your career if you are planning to work in a medical field. Depending on the location and education requirements it takes about 4-6 weeks. Not all of the Nursing homes offer employment after the studies, but I believe most of them do. In most instances where they offer employment after training classes are free, at some instances you have to sign agreement to work for the place for a certain period of time.
My relative and some of my friends went through similar training to obtain their CNA license. They started from classroom studies and then moved to practical hands on training. Both theoretical and practical knowledge are tested for CNA certification. All the classes were full day classes, and practical training generally started early in the morning.
I would highly recommend you to take a similar class because according to my friends' opinion it’s a good way to start.
