i would like to start a compost bin but have no clue where to start ANY tips would be helpful. i live in an appertment but do have a back pourch so i can have a bin there however i am short on money so im wondering if a large heavyduty trash bin with a tight fitting lid will work- also what do i need to do to keep a pile composting, do i have to turn it or just leave it? i really am clueless

Because of your space limitations, you might want to think of a worm composter. Your trash bin could work, but you wouldn't want a cover on it. The bacteria that do the work are aerobic. They need oxygen. It would even help to have some holes in the sides. Could get messy.

I have used heavy guage garbage bags. I think a can would work. You can put anything NON-PROTEIN in it- Vegetable trimmings, leaves, grass, egg shells, dead plants that you have cut into small pieces, rotten fruits and veggies, just about anything. I add regular dirt to mine. The dirt contains bacteria that are necessary for de-composing. I also used Rid-Ex, the septic tank enzyme. Just add what you have, cover, and wait until you have more. Turn it, add what you have, and cover. Check the moisture of it once in a while, and water if it feels powdery. Good luck! What you are attempting is wonderful!
