If we have the police to put away people, why are there social workers that can take children away? I mean if the parents are not criminals why such a harsh judgement? The government is tearing families apart.
I believe a parent should face their consequences with the police before loosing children.

I have my children and no involvement. However, I know people that have lost their children because they would not use medications such as Ritalin. Shouldn't these choices be made by the parent? Is it really worth $65/hr for each Social Worker when it comes to these choices?

We are being double taxed - in all kinds of ways (alcohol, cigarettes, estate, dividends and so forth) but this example isn't one of them.

Social workers are trained to recognize problems and concerns with family issues that police officers just aren't qualified to deal with.
For instance, a child could be neglected or psychologically abused and the police may never become aware or involved. When children are forcefully removed from a home, you can bet the farm it is for a very good reason. There are so many checks and balances and safeguards involved that it is far more often the case that a child is left with abusive parent(s) when if fact the child probably should be removed.

OK lets allow for a confusing statement first on taxes, and then a discussion on government regulation and enforcement of Child Welfare laws.
It is a extremely difficult problem for the Government to protect Children from the conduct of their own Parents, but it is the duty of the Government to handle this problem in the best way they can for the sake of the child and the State in terms of cost which are very high both economically and socially.
The tearing apart of the family usually begins with alcoholism, drug addiction, unemployment, family instability or/and violence, sometimes violence toward the children.
You are right, the Child Enforcement Department is a tough Agency to deal with, but it is under staffed and asked to do a job that is thankless most of the time. The fact that the budgets are short changed is not the children or the parent's fault, but it is also not the staff's fault. Everyone is a victim of the system we employ to care for our children at the County level.
In fact, you can look to the State and the Federal Government for not providing necessary funds for the job. But you also have to understand that our School systems are failing also.
This is not the fault of any of the for mentioned victims, but it is not exclusively anyone levels fault except for all the peoples fault for not directing their federal government in a more successful manner.
This is a government of the people, for the people and by the people, so if it is not working correctly, then in needs an overhaul, but the overhaulers are exclusively the people.
