A 12 inch ruler is a linear foot. Some but not all people today use the term linear foot, to distinguish between a Square foot,or a cubic foot.
As an example, If I say the room is 10 X 12 (linear foot) or just say foot, meaning the same thing, it is 120 Square Foot, of feet it you prefer.
If it is a box 3 linear foot, each way, then it would contain 3X3X3 equal 9 cubic foot.

A linear foot is a measurement used to sell many products. Lumber, material, pipe, carpeting are all good examples. These products are usually sold for a certain amount for each foot of length in them A board that is 4 foot long would be 4 linear feet. A piece of material that is 3 foot long would be 3 linear feet regardless of the width on the material. Rather than trying to calculate the number of square yards in carpet, it is usually sold by the linear foot, which is why the price per foot may be lower on a carpet that is 8 foot wide as opposed to one that is 12 foot wide, since both are being sold according to length.

Linear foot is a measurement of length. It is just a simplified term to say a unit of length in term of footage. e.g you say 100 linear foot instead of 100 feet long.

A linear foot is one foot long. Regardless of the width. For example if you are buying a board that is 2x6. It will be sold by the foot. Same thing if you are buying a board that is 2x8. You still buy it by the foot.

Twelve inches. It's what we generally think of as a foot. In contrast to square feet (as in 2 feet X 3 feet = 6 feet), or board feet in the lumber business (as in 2 feet X 3 feet X 2 inches = 12 board feet).
