That is not at all true . The area of the ex-Soviet union was and still is very industrialised.

China had long established trade on the eastern coast of that country. And the Western Powers already had long contacts with many families living in China. That is why China is really only communist in the countryside and capitalist in their cities and ports. And the cities use the advantage of the large resources of raw materials and human labor in the countryside as well as their "communist" system.

Mostly because they are communist in name only. For the past 10 or 15 years, China has been experimenting with "Special Economic Zones" in various regions (Guandhong, Shanghai, etc). And they quickly noticed that those zones posted economic numbers and tax revenues that blew away the traditionally planned regions.

Now you cant take five steps w/o walking through a special economic zone of one type or another.

Combine that with their migration from rural agrarian society to a modern industrial one and they are bound to make profits. Its the same cycle the US underwent in the late 1890's and it works like this: poor rural farmers come to the city to work in a factory making 1 dollar a day (which is more money than they have dreamed of). This low cost of labor delivers greater profits to the company and the post phenomenal profits and numbers.

But the key is the special economic zones.

And as an aside, the MNC I work for is thinking of relocating apparel factories to Indonesia. Why? The cost of labor is rising!

One might suspect that the reason for China's progression as an economic giant would be based on sheer numbers alone(population), but it is bit more than that. The ingenuity of the Chinese people merits mentioning here. It's one thing to be worlds most populous nation, but it is another when you turn that to your advantage and utilize the largest skilled worked force in the world, and on the other end supply and develop a huge market with a billion plus citizens.

China is poorer than Brazil, and China economy in 2006 is about 1/3 the per capita income of Mexico, so its got another 30 years even to reach the incomes of poorer european countries. China is not really communist anymore just the appreance of it. Look closer China economic game is similar to thier nusiance neighbours in Twain, and South Korea. Take 30 years of 6% growth just to reach economic efficency of present day Spain. Its got a ways to go

because they are the only communist country that is not a communist nation.

it is very contradictory, but China is run by the commmunist party, but they allow free trade and free enterprise. this allows for alot of wealth which in turns make the Government richer and can develop more and more things (like hospitals, dams, electric supply stations, etc.)
