Firstly I think the guys just love to receive a card just as much as ladies. An inexpensive gift could be a packet of rolo's, as you love him enough to give him the full packet not just the last one. It is not the cost but the thought and suggestion of the gift that counts and he should see this, they do say little things mean a lot.

A little stuffed animal holding a heart, a single rose and a card would be a good start.
If you can afford a home cooked meal that he would like, and desert, that is a wonderful start to a great evening.

Get one of those singing cards! They run about $3. And then make him a cake in the shape of a valentine. Things that are made are the best presents.
