If someone called me articulate, I would thank them. What is the PC way to compliment someone without being branded a racist?

Apparently this has now become the new "n" word. Seems if you're white you can not compliment an AA without the freakishly-hyper-sensitive to look for a 'hidden' meaning. When will "handsome", "beautiful" or "intelligent" become offensive?

And the 'clean' comment from Biden--I understand that to mean that he has 'no skeletons' so to speak. Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson are hate mongering, self serving profiteers with very questionable 'fund raising' practices who never had a snowball's chance in hades of being elected.

i don't consider it racist to call a non-white person articulate... i believe it is a compliment to call someone articulate as i can appreciate a fellow human beings intelligence. i dont understand how that could be racist one bit! people need to stop seeing things as us vs them, color shouldn't be an issue this is 2007 come on...

No, they know Biden is not racist. But the comment gave impression that Biden thinks other former black candidates like Jackson, Sharpton and others were not 'clean', 'articulate' and main stream guys. Also, complementing blacks for being articulate speaker does imply some racial stereo types of blacks. How many times you see people complementing whites for 'speaking well' or being articulate in public spot light? (not just everyday folks)

It depends on the source and the true intentions of the speaker. Some say complementary things to seem knowledgeable, others to conceal their real disdain. A genuine complement or remark on a person's fluency and grasp of the subject spoken of should never be unwelcome, but some people live in a society where very little of what they hear is sincere.

I think it sounds racist to call a non-white person articulate because u never hear anyone calling a white person articulate. I've only heard white people saying it to non-whites. When they say that it suggests that all non-white people are not articulate. I don't think calling anyone intelligent is racist.

Is it? I would laugh at someone if they got offended when I called them articulate or intelligent.

The reason it seems racist is that it appears that you are assuming other people of color are inarticulate.

Would you say the same thing to a white person or do you automatically assume that they are articulate?

Joe Biden said obama was the first african American presidential candidate that was clean... implying Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton were dirty. thats what struck me as odd, maybe not racist.

Oh, you mean if someone says to you "you speak proper english" , and you happen to be black, that wouldn't be racist? Just because a person is black, they have to speak ebonics? How is that NOT racist? Would you be suprised if a white person spoke proper english?
