Every humane sociey is going to be different. Call back and ask what the adoption fee includes. Most shelters adoption fee covers basic vaccinations ( distemper and bordatella) and de-worming. Sometimes the animal will be altered or somethings you will have to pay for the sterelization surgery.
I work at a humane society and our adoption fee covers: basic vaccines, flea bath, basic grooming, heart worming or a FeLeuk/FIV test and a microchip. We try to get as many animals fixed as funds allow us, otherwise that cost is covered by the adopter.
Please remember that a Great Dane is a giant dog breed so if you think $85 is pricey for an adoption fee, remember that this giant breed is going to eat a lot, need a large crate, heart worm preventative is based on weight of the dog

That is really something if you found a dane at the humane society. Usually rescue shelters (breed specific) snap those dogs up in an instant. You need to call back and ask if the 85 will be the total. There may be other things you need to pay for, but I doubt that obedience training is a factor. I'm sure someone else posted this but please know what you are getting yourself into before you get that dane. I have had them in my family since I was born, and while they are magnificent creatures, they need a great deal of care. They have very strict guidelines as to what they can eat, how much they can exercise, etc. They are also very prone to health problems, so make sure you can afford massive vet bills in the future.

they would not charge for obedience training, but may charge for the county or city license.
they may also require a neuter deposit, if that has not yet been done. Just give them another call in the morning, and they will be happy to answer your questions. that is one reason they are there .to get these dogs into homes. they won't want to 'hide' any costs.
I know one humane society in central CA, that charges that amount, with no additional charges.

that is probably the total cost. shelters are mostly about the animals well being not for profit. you'll most likely only pay for any vet care he had, application fee and such. if you'd feel better call them and ask how much cash you will need to cover everything and they'll tell you.

That's the only cost of adopting the dog, but you will still have to take him to your vet every year for his vaccinations.
