Is it really a good thing that Congress doesn't debate the issue, no changes in policy occur, Bush has unlimited power, people like John McCain preaching psychological words of wisdom against any rebuttle against the president's plans like "vote of no confidence," etc. while maybe 35% of the country think more military operations and war in Iraq is the answer to peace in the region? This is something to be happy and proud of as an American? Americans should have faith in a government that operates to prevent change?

blocking open debate of an issue is such a blatant knock to democracy
ridiculous decision
Blocking bills or laws is one thing, but when you refuse to discuss an issue, you've completed destroyed the foundation of democracy

Get off your pulpit. This is supposed to be a question/answer forum, not one for your preaching. This American would like to see the Congress do some work, which would be much easier if they spent time debating and voting on things that are in their control instead of sending "non-binding resolutions" that are the equivalent of pouting to the Commander in Chief. Why don't they try passing some bills without so much sneaky things attatched to them? Then perhaps things could just go up for a vote and the Congress would run efficiently. Or perhaps if they stopped voting themselves pay raises (when the vast majority do not even depend on their incomes as Congressmen and Senators as primary income) and tried to get some work done, THEN I'd be happy and proud. What a loaded "question"...

They shouldn't have blocked it. NOT discussing the problem is where the trouble begins. By the Republicans blocking the debate, they are showing that they will indeed support the President blindly in everything he does, without question. Which is exactly why Democrats replaced a few Republicans in the last election.
We need to face the problem of Iraq. Congress needs to discuss it. We elect Congressmen to represent the American people's views in Congress. When 70% of Americans don't support the war in Iraq, and 1/2 of the Senate doesn't recognize that, that only causes more problems.

Since the vote was 49-47 and two Republicans were backing the resolution doesn't that mean at least two Democrats abstained? It sounds like they didn't want to have a debate. Perhaps that would remind everyone who voted for the original Senate resolution to authorize military action in Iraq.
Don't be naive, this was a preordained result. The Democrats set this up to make the Republicans look bad, while at the same time keeping those who voted for war safely in the background. Reid, Kerry and Clinton all voted for the war and are the most vociferous of the war detractors now... they didn't want this to be debated.

How is it any different than what the democrats have been doing for the past 6 years blocking everything the republicans have tried to do, blocking supreme court justices, until the threat of the constitutional option was a real possibility and many other examples. So, I guess it's ok when the democrats do it, but not when the republicans use the same process.

do you know how our politics works. Both parties do this all the time. If you are more in power you create more laws and garbage. If you are out of power you try to stop everything the other party does. If we did not have this there would be crazy laws in this country.

it's a national disgrace.
republicans pretend that the war takes place so that soldiers can be in the field and all are afraid to act as though IT'S THEIR ACTIONS THAT KEEP THOSE SOLDIERS IN IRAQ.
