How is Oedipus Rex a tragic figure? Evidence from the play is greatly appreciated.

He unknowingly kills his father and sleeps with his mother, how is that not tragic? What's more, he does so with the mindset that he was defying fate, and making his own way through life, when all the while, he was fulfilling his destiny.

The main reason is because he is a victim of a fate he didn't choose. As in the play his father is told he will kill his father and marry his mother. His father tries to elude fate by leaving him out on a mountain, but as in all Greek Tradgedies, the fortold becomes true either way.

He did every thing trying to avoid his fate but it turn out that every thing he did helped bring up his tragic end.

I don't think he is a "tragic" figure. Rather an unbalanced idiot who nade some stupid choices, and they did him in. (Its been 40 years since I read the play, so I can't quote it)
