I feel the same way you do. My money is important to me and I don't wish to just give it away. I never tip and I don't care if the waiter gives me a dirty look or not.
However, most waiters/waitresses expect a tip and become a bit 'puffy' if you don't (it's almost like your required to leave it).
What I do know about their job is; they are hired at minimum wage and the only way they make more is by the tips customers leave for them.

When you tip a waiter/waitress you are paying for the service of being waited on by someone else. They are in a way, your personal servant for the time you spend in the restaurant. They are not serving the restaurant, they are serving you.
Would you go to a mechanic and ask him to fix your car, pay for the materials, but then refuse to pay for the labor/service. It's somewhat similar.
Also, I hope you know that you are only hurting the poor waitress by not tipping. The corporate owners/private owners of the restaurant do not get harmed by you not tipping their waitstaff. They can care less, they are still laughing all the way to the bank.
If no one tipped waitstaff; then you would not be getting full service at any restaurants. Also, if people stop tipping, then most waitresses would have to quit their jobs or go on welfare/food stamps to support themselves and their families.
Waitstaff DOES NOT get paid minimum wage. In most states, they are paid way, way under. About 3-4 dollars an hour.

I can tell you've never worked in a wait-staff position! Do you like to be appreciated for a job done right? When you work in a minimum-wage service occupation, that's the primary way of showing appreciation. The amount of the tip is definately up to you, you're paying it, after all! Waiters/Waitresses are people too; they want to be shown appreciation when they work extra hard for you. Think about it. Don't be cheap.

If a waitress takes it up with her boss, she's gonna get fired, and replaced by someone who will accept the conditions.
It wouldn't hurt to leave her a buck or two. Then, the next time you go there, you'll get good service. If you don't tip, she'll remember the person who stiffed her. Next time, you get slow service.

I was a waitress and I made 2.50 an hour. Some waitresses live on those tips. But if they are bad waitresses they should find work elsewhere

Tip means 'to improve promptness' and it's generally polite to tip waiters. It's a certain percent (about 10%) of the value of your order that you should usually give as a tip.

do you think that we would bartend or wait on people if we didn't get tipped? hell no. people are so rude when it comes to food and alcohol. we put up with so much crap from people all day long. we play personal phsyciatrists. waiting tables is very hard. you try to run around all night remebering what peole asked for. do you know too that we get taxed the crap out of. my checks for a 35 hour work week on minimum wage are maybe 200.00 because i get taxed on my tips. we have to claim 10% of our sales even if we dont make that much. theres times i claim i made 100.00 and i only made 90.00 because of people like you. thats not fair. dont be so cheap.

Be a good person. Double the tax on the dining bill. It's the way the system goes...The person who deserves to be bit is the owner who makes workers work for tips.
