A couple of friends and myself are looking apartments and we need to know what our bills may look like in about 5-6 months. We have an idea of our water ($10-$20/month) but we don't really know what electric will look like.

What I would like to know is?

1) How much do you pay monthly,
2) Who is your energy provider
3)Does your energy provider require a contract/will allow for new people?
4)What do you live in, what you normally run (a computer, tv, keep your lights on all hours of the day, etc.)
5) anything else that may be useful!

Thanks!

In the summer months, you will need to run your AC alot, since it is so humid, for a 2 bedroom with your thermostat set at 75, about 200 a month, in the winter time, about 100. And that is with tv on, computer, lights on at night, etc. Also, the company you get depends on your area, no contract on electric, but a deposit is required, they can break that up in installments too, good luck in Houston, fun, fun town, traffic sucks, but other than that, expect a high electrc bill in summer.

Do not now live in Houston area but I did 6 years ago. Was in a large upstairs 1 bedroom with apartment with a west facing sliding glass window and bedroom window. I kept the AC on 73 and heat on 72. I average bill was 85 a month and often left lights on when I was out. The summer was much worse than the winter, one mild February I had a bill of $23.
Houston Power and Light was my provider. I had to pay a deposit {I think it was 50 but I do not remember, but after a year of service they applied the deposit to my bill.

The best thing to look for is an apartment with shade or pine trees that shade the roof or windows. Mine had no shade at all but I had the advantage of not having any morning sun. I did have a porch with an overhang so I only had direct sunlight on the bedroom window.

Each situation is different, but I would look at Friendswood Baybrook area because it is quick to Hobby Airport, near one of the better malls, close to the Kemah waterfront {you will love this!} and only half an hour from Galveston Beaches. Also that side of town has very quick access to the medical district / downtown, is not hard to get to from I -10 and has less crime and some good churches in the near area {if you are into church}.
