Mel Gibson won a Oscar for Braveheart 1995. He is the only Australia to win an Oscar for Best Director.
Besides Mel Gibson 6 other Australian Directors have been nominated for an Academy Award (best director). They are John Farrow (Wake Island 1942), Bruce Beresford (Tender Mercies 1996), Chris Noonan ( Babe 1995), Scott Hicks (Shine 1996), Peter Weir ( Master and Commander 2003, Truman Show 1998, Dead Poets Society 1989, Witness 1985).
