The simplified answer is that ROM is like the long term memory in your brain which holds information and memories.
RAM on the other hand is what you are thinking right now. And just like your brain, your computer has a limit to how MUCH it can think about at one time...
A computer uses RAM to hold the information it currently needs to run the program right now (in the RAM memory chips). ROM is used to store all the rest of the information (in your hard drive) that may be needed later. If you save a file or document it goes into ROM (hard drive). When you open that file or document, the RAM holds it so it can be changed.

ROM - Read Only Memory, is permanent storage. It is the big storage pot and where everything is stored when the computer is turned off. When you start your computer, the items are loaded into RAM - Random Access Memory: this is temporary storage. The more RAM you have, the more software programs and things you can have open at the same time. Think of RAM like a work table. You can fit more things on a bigger table. But at night, everything is stored away in your ROM pot, ready to be used the next time.

ROM is permanent, and both can be written to. ROM was on of the first types of memory available that would remember with the electricity turned off. ROM can be written to only once and the information will remain the same forever. EPROM can written to many times but it needs to be erased before each writing by using a special machine. EPROM was commonly used by spies to smuggle information out of a country. It was also used in most early personal computers.
RAM needs to be constantly refreshed by telling it what is it remembering. http://www.answers.com/topic/ram-refresh
There are newer types of RAM that remember with the power turned off. One is called EERAM. It was invented in the 1980's but has not really become popular until recently. Small Flash Drives use EERAM type RAM.

RAM is temporary memory. Basically when you run a program, it comes from your ROM (ie CD or Hard drive), and goes into the RAM to process the program. Make sense? ; )

if you're a computer program then you can write to ram, but not to rom. try saying that ten times when you're drunk.
ram stands for random access memory, and programs can store information within ram memory. it'll be lost when you reboot your pc though since ram is only a temporary memory storage medium.
rom stands for read only memory, and programs cannot (normally) store information within rom memory since it's read only.

ROM= "read only memory"
RAM="random access memory"
A rom is meant to be written to ONE TIME ad from then on only read from. Usefull for many "firmware" programs such as BIOS.
RAM is meant to hold data ad programs on a temporary basis (the programs your systme is using) and able to be modified as needed.

RAM stands for Random Rccess Memory while ROM stands for Read-Only Memory.
RAM is like your floppy disk which was write enabled, you can write(save) and read(open) files from it. ROM is like you floppy disk in write protect mode, or the CD-ROM, you cn only read data from it.
