L.A. will be fine once they have a contending team again. The city has a population of like all the expansion teams combined. Like New york, it is easy to fill a stadium and get decent tv rating once the team isn't a joke.

It will never be like it is in Toronto, but because of LA's population, it doesn't need to be

P.S to the guy who said that hockey doesn't get the recognition ANYWHERE, obviously doesn't know what Canada is like (every Canadian team that is)

It's simple. There are not enough die-hard puckheads on the West Coast. A true hockey fan supports the team no matter what. The Kings really only got support when they were renting Gretzky for a while. And how does a true hockey-loving fan take a team seriously when they are named after a movie? Mighty Ducks!

Look at the MN Wild. A so-so team but they have sold out every home game since they came into the league because the folks just love hockey. Same thing in Montreal and other cities where fans love hockey.

Moving more superstars like Thornton out there might help, but not enough to get West Coast hockey the kind of recognition and respect that hockey in the east or north get.

One reason is certainly that it's more of a cold-weather sport, but there are others. Back in the Gretzky days there was a lot more interest of course, so it CAN get recognition. Having a team that hasn't made the playoffs the last several seasons can't be helping. You also now have 4 or 5 NHL teams in the area where you once had one. When the Ducks first got in the NHL and Gretzky was still here that wasn't an issue, but now those 2 teams compete for fan dollars. Indeed, I used to make it a point to see several games in BOTH places, now I haven't even gone to see EITHER all year.

And it's all part of a larger problem.....hockey is not getting the recognition it deserves ANYWHERE. A lot of things are not helping: Bertuzzi and McSorley committing assault, an all star game nobody could see even had they wanted, penalty-filled games, sportscasters showing fights instead of Goals and Saves, a senseless waste of a season where players could have gotten a better deal than now, owners who don't know the game and don't care about their teams, and a sport that doesn't realize what it thinks are little changes in the rules make a mockery of the game and doesn't know how (or doesn't care) to promote itself.

Note to downstairs: I said Hockey does not get the recognition it DESERVES anywhere. I stand by that statement.

it's all around the courty. it seem that the t.v statons just don't care about hockey. if you really think about how many stations play hockey games? the L A kings aren't one of the top team in the league anymore look at the bruins they are in the same boat.
back in the 80's they were the killer b's now they don't even get a d if you know what i mean

There are many reasons, first of all there are about a handfull of players that come from californa so its hard to relate. Second theres no ice in LA so most of the fans are transplants. and third we really dont care about it.
