Japan is a US ally. They have the world's second largest economy still, I believe. When North Korea starts up some type of trouble with their leader, USA consults Japan, South Korea, China and Russia on how to handle deal with the situation. Japan is a big importer of US goods, so yes. China is still a Communist nation, while Japan
is a democracy. China has made great strides in recent years to making their economy more modern, but it is still more restrictive than Japan is. Japan is probably the closest country that resembles USA in Asia.

Yes, Japan is considered a friend of the US. I do think that Chinese people coming to the US from mainland China (not Taiwan) do have a disadvantage. Especially in the post-911 era, Chinese people will have some disadvantage with the US government's national security concerns.
People who still think of Japan as the bad guy obviously know nothing about the country, the people, or the culture, or the last 50 years worth of international news.
I have lived in Japan for 6 years and have been speaking, reading and writing the language for more than 20 years. I can tell you that Japan is one of the most pacifist countries on the face of this Earth. Don't believe, try watching Japanese news on TV sometimes (with English subtitles if necessary), and from the topics covered, you will see what it is important to the Japanese people.

To be quite honest, most Americans don't know the difference between the two. I speak Chinese and people are always asking questions about how i know the difference and how to tell who is from where. I think the Japanese are at a significant disadvantage with some because of WWII. Old hate can be hard to squash.
Many people still hate the Japanese. And just as many people are obsessed with their youth oriented culture.

I don't think Chinese people who come here are put at a disadvantage. There's plenty of Chinese kids at my school and there's never any racism at all with them. Yeah Japan's one of our bffs and half of my generation is OBSESSED with them, but that doesn't mean we hate China or Chinese people.

I don't think whether the country is an ally or not changes the way we look at the individual person. To me, it doesn't make a difference where their from.
