Booker T Washington was a truly wonderful leader and probably made the most significant contributions toward helping African Americans in post-slavery America of any person during that time. He founded the Tuskeegee Institute, so that any ***** could get an education. He built the school from nothing, and did not ask for government handouts. He was totally nonviolent, and always taught that hard work, determination, and more hard work would accomplish everything. He enlisted the help of George Washington Carver, America's greatest inventor, and together they changed the way of life for thousands. You can learn much about BTW by reading about GW Carver, too. Take time to read about both extraordinary men. You'll be glad you did.

Booker T Washington proposed a plan for the success of Black people in America after slavery that advocated working ones way up the social latter by earning respect by learning specialized skills (The reason he founded Tuskegee Institute).
This plan ignored the fact that low economic status and plight were not the only problem facing Black Americans. The plan basically asked Black people wait on white people decide to accept them and respect them the as persons and human beings in the face of all the segregation and racism that was most alive at the time he proposed the plan. The timely (or any)success of the plan was very unlikely in light of white status being preserved by not opening jobs to anyone else.
I don't know WHY Booker T Washington is kind of looked to as a hero in the Black community cause he is widely regarded as a sell-out. He is a prominent figure. And if you want to learn more about him you should look him up in terms "Booker T. Washington vs Dubois". Dubois made an opposite argument that advocated black people take charge of their own future by pursuing education and making their own economy, not working their way up an impossible latter.
Dubois writing on this is called "The Soul of Black Folks". I forget Washington's speech, but I a sure you can find it now.

"One reason that Booker T. Washington remains important is that he is a model for other people about how a person who sets a high goal can achieve it, and is thus not a model simply for African Americans but for any young person who feels that these odds are stacked against him," Willis Regier, director of the University of Illinois Press
