Computer magazine I read recently studied this. They concluded that you see a big improvement up to 1 GB of RAM. After that the jump, like to 1.5 GB, is much less. 1.5 GB to 2 GB would hardly be noticeable. The only reason for larger amounts of RAM is if you open a lot of applications at the same time or you are doing something big like professional video editing.

Accually depending upon a couple of things all of you are wrong. If you do have four gigs of ram in your pc you can accually fully load windows XP into the ram instead of using the cache. Also if you are doing heavy video editing you definately need more ram. If your talking about somebody who just surfs the net and what not. 1 Gig is where you quit noticing boosts in speed.

Depends on what OS you run and how many programs you run concurrently. On XP, you'll notice a big difference going from 512 to 1024, and a smaller difference from 1024 to 2048. Anything above that is basically a waste. For Vista, all those numbers are doubled.

It all depends on the type of applications you are running, but for high end gaming and video editing you can almost see the improvements until 2 gigs on Windows XP, I am not familiar with Vista myself yet.
