I think showing respect for the flag is showing respect for your country and showing respect for yourself. I think people who do not respect our flag a) want attention, b) have no respect for themselves) and C) are trying to belittle a country that allows them to show disrespect to the flag when in many countries they would shot for doing so. Of course in the US we have freedom of expression and it is not a punishable crime to prove that your an asshole by burning the flag.

We SHOULD respect the flag because WE ARE AMERICAN. If we don't want our flag respected then why would we live here and presume to enjoy our freedoms that this country has always allowed us, when there are so many countries where the people are oppressed and their freedoms suppressed, and death is the punishment for dissension. We are very lucky to live under the stars and stripes. Many men and women have died to protect the freedoms we enjoy today, and those brave people were patriots who would give their lives to protect what our flag stands for. How ungrateful and selfish is the so called American who cannot or will not stand up proud for what our country is and has always been, which is a free country where one can be what he wants to be, do what he wants to do and grow to heights some people in other countries can only dream of. And this country has always been the country who has helped other countries and fought their battles when they could not go it alone so they to could be freed from the oppression of tyrannical dictatorships and Communist nations. We should salute our flag with our hands over our hearts and be grateful to God that we are Americans!

The flag is a symbol, if you respect the thing the symbol stands for then yes. I love my country and respect the flag. I'm not always proud of things done in her name.

Money after all is nothing but a symbol, it has no real value, but I don't see many people burning it.

Yes, always. Respect for our Flag conveys love and respect for our country. That does not mean one has to agree with the government at that time. I dislike Bush's administration and its policies. But I love the flag, and I love the United States of America.

The flag is only a symbol. Respect, instead, the country and people it stands for.

There is no symbol of our nation or our freedom which is more revered than the flag. In my opinion, it deserves our respect due to the fact that hundreds of thousands of our soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines gave their lives fighting for that flag.

It also deserves protections not granted to any other symbol. There are any number of symbols of the US which protestors can destroy to show their hatred of their own country, but the flag should be protected.

In no way do I support the KKK, but I find it amazing that the same people who defend burning the flag because of their right to free expression are the same ones who have no problem with legislation to prohibit cross burning. If YOU have the right to express yourselves regardless of the opinions of the overwhelming majority of Americans, why shouldn't Klan members?

If the citizens respect each-other and themselves, if they elect people whom they respect and who respect themselves, then you can respect the country and in turn respect the flag as a symbol of what that countries people stand for.

If not, then the flag is just a piece of cloth.

First, you should respect the country. And if that is the case, then you will want to respect the flag and everything else that respresents it. To show respect for the flag and not respect the country is heresy.
