I agree, people need to get over it. It wasn't meant to be a slam. I think that when people hear this, they snap to the wrong conclusion, because it does get annoying, because I feel like responding "how did you expect him to sound?" Some think that this description is rarely used to describe a white person. "You speak so well" - I can't tell you how many times I've heard this.

But I think that when a lot of people say this, it's not because they expect him to be ghetto, but that they're impressed with how he articulates his opinions and expresses ideas. It's a compliment!

What's even funnier is that this has come up a lot recently and he's been really gracious about the compliments, so why is everyone else getting upset on his behalf.

When a white person says a black person is "articulate," there is the connotation that most blacks are not articulate.

It wouldn't be this way except that over the years, so many whites have chosen that exact word to describe a black person who impressed them, and it's generally a word the same white people do NOT use to describe a white person with similar communication skills. Plus, the other words - and the tone of voice - the whites often use in addition to the word "articulate" when referring to the person they're describing make it clear the connotation is that *this* particular black person is different from the stereotypical person they usually have in mind.

Should the person using the word articulate when describing a black person be chastised? Probably not, but it's definitely a sign that the speaker is, at best, somewhat ignorant. And it makes him look rather foolish to others.

Huh? A white teacher once called me articulate and I was not offended, I thought it was a compliment. Barack Obama is articulate, if Bush is being chastised then he probably said it like it was uncommon for a Black person in the US to be as well-spoken as Obama. This is my first time hearing about that. I think it's kinda funny, I always thought that George Bush wouldn't know articulation if it bit him.

Racism is a be conscious that has been over & pass over used for therefore very lengthy. Examples: do not Hip Hop track, your a racist. don't love Islamic terrorists, your a racist don't love unlawful immigrants, your a racist. this is all so stupid, we opt to recuperate from this time period of racism. don't love some crew or interest you're a bigot or basically practice sturdy style. you're not to any extent further unavoidably a racism. allow pass & allow God. Your emotions & your actual heart are your own organization. Your inner most opinion isn't any individual organization. Be variety , be well mannered & be respectful, yet you do not ought to love each little thing about each body. No all blacks are alike, no longer all Muslims are terrorists, no longer all immigrants are unlawful. we opt to relax. If some human beings spent as a lot time operating troublesome to strengthen themselves as they do complaining & blaming others they could get lots farther in existence. sit back & appreciate existence!

Bush said Obama is the FIRST articulate black presidential candidate. It is not insulting to Obama, it is insulting to all the OTHER black people who have run for presidency. Bush is implying that all of them are not articulate.

Apparently this has now become the new "n" word. Seems if you're white you can not compliment an AA without the freakishly-hyper-sensitive to look for a 'hidden' meaning. When will "handsome", "beautiful" or "intelligent" become offensive?

BTW--As a white woman I have referred to Halle Barry as "beautiful". Do I owe her an apology? Or was I implying (in "code") that no other black woman is beautiful?

Perhaps he said it as if he were surprised or as if an articulate black man is an oddity. This is especially offensive coming from the Decider.

It's similar to when my (white) pastor said he'd never seen a black man drinking hot tea. Hello?! He said it as if drinking tea were upperclass and proper, and as if he didn't put Black people in the "upperclass and proper" category. How stupid! And wrong.

The comment itself is innocuous; it's where the comment comes from that is more offensive.

It's also highly ironic that Bush, when touting his No Child Left Behind initiative, said he wanted to free the country of the "prejudice of low expectations." Sounds like he needs to free himself first.

Here's the problem. It implies that not all Blacks, let's include other minorities too, are articulate. Would that be a compliment to a white man?

Bush has speech writers who should know better than that. That "compliment" is more like a pat on head. Trust me on this. In his next speech, he shouldn't use that word.

Also, if his speech writers are smart, do not apologize, just change the wording.

NOTE: A republican wrote a book (holy cow, republicans can write books?? Yes, I was amazed by it too) about power words for 2007. He was on, you guessed it, FOX news this past SB weekend. I like watching stupid shows once in awhile. Sorry.

That's a compliment so I don't know why he would be chastised.
He is an articulate man and that is a good thing for anyone to be, and is certainly something ol' G.W is not. I'm pretty sure someone looked that word up for him.
Obviously, U.S education has declined so vastly we need a dictionary for basic vocabulary words.

BTW- I'm white, and I WOULD consider it a compliment to be called articulate-even by a moron.

Well, coming from most , saying someone is articulate would be a compliment, but since Bush said it, it might not mean quite as much.
