I thought that's terrible...the first time I took a practice one, I got an 1800....and this is out of 2400.....

Wow....well, I looked at Berkeley, and the average is about 1790....

I'm confused....I thought my 1800 was just average.

So, what's the deal with this?
Thanks

out of 2400, about 1500 is average (500 per section). 1800 is not a bad score, but if you're going to Berkeley, you'll probably need to do better. Average at good schools like Berkeley or Ivy League schools is usually 2100+, so you might want to take it again, because being average is not the best way to get into competitive schools. Don't worry, if 1800 is where you're starting out, you should be fine, you'll only get better.

If you score 500 or better on each SAT section, you are doing better than the average test taker.

But to be competitive at UC Berkeley you'll need to average over 600 on all five of the required SATs, the 3 SAT Reasoning scores, plus the 2 SAT II scores.

1800 (combined Math, Reading, Writing) is better than average, but among UC Berkeley admits, it's just average.

Don't get discouraged, if you've only tested once, you will most likely score higher a second time.

And remember that UC Berkeley will look at the entire application, so stay active and involved in your school and community, developing leadership skills and gaining recognition.

Good luck!

depends on a couple things.

first, the school you are trying for. SAT's are a rough measure of your ability to learn (based on the basic requirements.) you could forget half of what you were taught and still be good for some schools. generally, the more the school costs, the higher the score is considered "good"

second, what year we are talking about. the max used to be 1800 when i took it, so 1100 was a fairly high score back then.

third... remember, many people not planning to go to college do not even bother with the test. there is a little slant given to the results by the fact that only people looking towards forward academics even bother to take it.

youre probably tired of hearing this but it depends on where you want to go
harvard doesn't accept anyone who doesn't have an average over 2200 [thats where i am applying for]
an 1800 isn't the best score i admit [i got an 1860 a few years ago]
your score also depends on how old you are [if you are 13-14 a 1700 is good]
you should aim for a 2250 if you want to get into a really good college.
