I can't enable encryption over a wireless network and windows says that the connection is not secure. If I enable encryption I can't access the internet. What could be the problem here?

The router and your adapter have to have the same wireless encryption method and key.

Windows is correct....there is no such thing as a "secure" wireless connection. There is only more secure and less secure. If it is not your network you cannot change the encryption. (WEP or WPA encryption)

If it is your network, you can access the settings page and change the encryption settings....and while you are in there make sure you change the router's default password.

What type of encryption are you using? WEP or WPA?

Also after you enable the encryption on the router, do you put the security key on your computer when you attempt to connect to the router?

You might try making sure your wireless router and computer are using the same bit rate of encryption, i.e., 64 or 128 bit. Recheck your passcodes for any error (such as CAPS). Also check firewall settings. (If you have a 2Wire router/modem, check settings in the gateway.2wire.net page with a browser). Hope you get more answers and best of luck!

when encryption is turned on, your computer needs to provide a key to the router - this is where the security part comes in.

at the point where you enable encryption, specify a key. then have your computer connect to the router, and you should be asked to enter a key.
