Realizing that what we perceive as reality is often very different than other people's perceptions of the same event.

For example, you and I could watch the same event unfold and tell 2 very different versions of what happened.

Religious beliefs.

We are given religion as children. The religious beliefs serve to define our world, but because they are based on myth, we are really seeing "shadows".

Leaving a religion is like being "blinded by the light". The truth is difficult to cope with at first.
