If you're just trying to be noticed and given props for doing good things, just make a lot of a money and give it away... but that's actually selfish. Doing good things to be seen as a good person is for your own benefit, not for the greater good.
Any volunteering or aid of someone in need will benefit the 'greater good', but you won't always be given the credit you deserve. Just give help where it's needed.

I agree with other answerer that doing it for recognition means that anything you achieve is actually worthless. Here is a pet project of mine that you could join quietly and do a lot of good without being recognised or acknowledged.
I believe that many of the worlds ills are caused by intolerance and bigotry. You are a member of the HUMAN race, (there are no others). We are all here on this earth together. everything you do affects the lives of everyone else, and you are related by blood to them all! Eradicate all bigotry and hatred from your own philosophy and quietly preach the virtues of tolerance harmony and love for your fellows at every opportunity.

Be the change you would like to see in the world. i think that is a famous quote and, unfortunately i do not know who said it. It might not be noticed by millions of people, but it WILL be noticed by those around you. If you long for integrity, honesty, patience and generosity in the world, then be that way yourself. It takes practice. You will hopefully influence the people around you to follow your lead. Best wishes!
