I was going to take 3 months off. Instead, I decided to be a stay at home mom instead. Loving it and now expecting #2 :)

I am due in 2 weeks, and plan on taking a 12-week maternity leave. Ideally I would have preferred 6 months. I plan on working up to the end.

With my first son I took 8 weeks of maternity leave, but I couldn't stand it so I quit 2 months later. I decided to be a stay at home mom. When I had my second son I was a stay at home mom and didn't get a job until my son was 9 months old. I didn't get a full time job though, only part time. I don't think that I can work full time because I hate being away from my sons.

I am currently on maternity leave right now. I took 3 months off, because that is all the time that we are allowed to take, without them giving our job away. I plan on going back to work only part time though. We have been talking about me staying home full time though if our budget will allow it.

I am taking 12 months off (6 weeks fully paid). In Australia 12 months is pretty standard if you are a permanent full time employee that has been employed for a continuous period of 12 months or more. I am currently in week 2 (awaiting the birth of my son) and am loving every minute of it - i dont know how i ever found the time to work. I have been lunching with friends, answering questions way too much here and walking and shopping and relaxing...........the baby is really going interrupt the peace. Fortunately the hubby is working and he will support us until such time as ii go back to work ........but i could get used to this.

I was on bed rest for 3 weeks, then had 9 weeks left of FMLA. The US is soooooooooooooo far behind in maternity leaves. It's ridiculous. Hopefully if you'd like more, you can take it. Nine weeks was too short. Good luck!

I took 6 weeks but could have taken longer. I worked nights and it was miserable. It almost ruined my marriage. My husband was left with a new baby to take care of through the night. I had to end up quitting my job and starting when my son was a few months old.

I took 5 1/2 months off and then reduced my hours to part time when I went back. We're going to start trying for a 2nd baby in a few months and will reduce my hours even more. I know not everyone can do this, so I feel very lucky.

i finished work two months before baby was due, it was great to have that time to rest beforehand. i planned to go back part-time when baby was six months old, then extended it to when she is one year old, which is next month, but i am not ready to go back. my husband makes enough money (just) for us to survive and so i have asked for another year leave without pay, which my boss has agreed to. but i don't know if i will go back then, hopefully number two will be on the way then! basically it is up to the individual i think - i thought i would be bored to tears at home and desperate to get back to work, but nothing could be further from the truth! i know some people have to go back to work for financial or other reasons and that is their choice, but this is what has worked for me and my family. good luck, you will find out what is right for you when the time comes.
