There are 280 members of the Baseball Hall of Fame (including Cal Ripken and Tony Gwynn, who haven't technically been inducted yet), of whom 229 were inducted for their playing ability. (The others were inducted as umpires, managers, or executives.)

First, you need to describe "major leagues". In the late 1800's and early 1900's, there were several leagues that are classified as major leagues. Are you including these players in your count of major league players? Are you including those players who played in the various ***** major leagues? Some of the players fro mthese leagues have also been inducted in the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
