Page was probably a better overall songwriter, but then again...most of his solos were kinda sloppy , especially live, so for sheer guitarness (that's right i made that word up) i'd go with hendrix. Having said THAT, i will now probably make all guitar purist snobs fume when i say that Hendrix was no big deal to me. It was a matter of musical history and direction - if Jimi never made the scene somebody else would have been in his place, that simple. Here's some other names i'll throw in: Malmsteen , Vai , Satch , Petrucci , Batio , Schenker , Sykes , Moore (and the other Moore too) .

In terms of style, originality, and sheer OOMPH. Hendrix. The better of the two on a strictly technical basis would be Page, who has a much broader knowledge of theory and his fretboard than Hendrix. And he was a better composer. But better than either of these is the man who Jimmy Page bowed down and took lessons from, and that man is jazz guitarist John McLaughlin, the original proprietor, or granddaddy, of what is called "shred guitar" . The difference between he and other shred guitarists is that he implements this blindingly fast technique over some very original rhythms, unlike metal guitarists, very odd time signatures and incredibly fast tempos(15/8 at 360 bpm in one song.. anyone care to try to play that one?), while utilizing some amazingly complex intervals and patterns; he didn't just run up and down his scales.. he jumped all over them at lightning speed!! Add to this he has mastered every style from classical to jazz to Middle Eastern (he was the first Western performer to be acknowledged as a valid performer of traditional Eastern music by Middle Eastern musicians). Add to this the fact that, along with Miles Davis, he practically invented the jazz fusion genre, as well as world music and the aforementioned subgenre of shred guitar. His only contemporaries, Al Di Meola, another virtuoso jazz guitarist, and Paco De Lucia, a flamenco player from Spain who can fingerpick 18 notes per second, can be found playing with him on the greatest guitar album ever recorded: "Friday Night in San Francisco" (credited to all three). If you have never heard that album, I highly recommend you find it or listen to it on Rhapsody.com
A must hear for any guitar enthusiast.

Jimmy Page, hands down. I think that Hendrix had the most TALENT and potential, but Page utilized it better.

There is no comparison Page! Any third rate garage band can do Hendrix as well as Hendrix could.
Hendrix choked on his own puke, what a way to go.
