I'm afraid it's a racial discrimination thing. It's a shame really as I had a knitted Golly when I was a kid and I thought it was fab.Being mixed race myself I think sometimes Colour/ Race discrimination can be really overreacted to. I have never seen a problem with gollys myself.

Just found out what a gollywog is.
Guess I've led a sheltered existance, to live half a century and never to have heard of it before. And now that I know what it is, I gotta say, good riddance!

As other people have said, they were thought to be politically incorrect.
I loved my golly when I was a little boy - and I am most certainly not racist now!
I do think it's a shame that dolls which have been loved by children for so long have been lost.
OK, Enid Blyton may have been a racist, but all those kids weren't.

The word itself became a derogatory term. If you ever read Blyton, gollies got treated particularly badly too, with terminology reserved for toys of their colour. It was likely a form of inherent racism, not questioned at the time, but becoming increasingly objectionable in more recent times.

They were deemed to be politically incorrect. I have never understood why because effectively it is a black doll, and what is wrong with that? I made one for my daughter and she loved it to bits.
I have seen one or two recently in tourist shops so hopefully they are making a comeback and reason has prevailed. They look so much better than some of the insipid white dolls on the market and are really cute. A child who loves a black doll is less likely to be racist later in life surely.

I saw a huge one for sale in a dolls shop today. At least a head bigger than Baby Annabel it was.

I don't know why?
But it definitely says a lot about the minds of the people who banned them, that they think black people look like golliwogs!!
