I must agree with the others. Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers as well as Les Claypool from Primus.

I don't know about the best bassist of any band EVER, but I saw the Sick Puppies at the Big Day Out on the weekend and their bassist was the best I'd seen in a long time, and she was HOT

There are two, I can't narrow it down sorry. John Deacon from Queen and Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Very different styles, yet both are extremely talented bassists.

Interesting how everyone above me listed bassists I have tremendous respect for, but there are several who absolutely dazzle me.

John Myung - Dream Theater

Dave LaRue - Dixie Dregs

Tony Levin - King Crimson, Peter Gabriel, Liquid Tension

I'm sure there are countless others, but these are three who immediately come to mind.

Jaco was the MAN! , Hamm , LaRue , Andy West (earlier Dregs period) , Wooten , all those cats are monsters. Still, my longtime fave from the rock period would be Fran Sheehan (Boston) , and no i don't know if he was related to Billy. The dude was highly underrated! Listen to the first two Boston releases and pay attention , one of the most "in the pocket" players ever.
