That's NOT deja vu.

Deja vu describes the experience of feeling that one has witnessed or experienced a new situation previously.

The experience of déjà vu is usually accompanied by a compelling sense of familiarity, and also a sense of "eerieness", "strangeness", or "weirdness". The "previous" experience is most frequently attributed to a dream, although in some cases there is a firm sense that the experience "genuinely happened" in the past. Déjà vu has been described as "Remembering the future."

The experience of déjà vu seems to be very common; in formal studies 70% or more of the population report having experienced it at least once. References to the experience of déjà vu are also found in literature of the past, indicating it is not a new phenomenon. It has been extremely difficult to invoke the déjà vu experience in laboratory settings, therefore making it a subject of few empirical studies. Recently, researchers have found ways to recreate this sensation using hypnosis.

What YOU described is NOT deja vu, but more like a premonition. A premonition refers to a situation when future events are foreknown or forecast. Premonitions are attributed to the presence of supernatural or paranormal abilities.

I don't doubt you can do this with dreams, but the experiences I had with my late mother seeing the future were different. She would just suddenly say that something was going to happen, and it always did. Then she would say, "I wonder why I said that?" One of her most interesting predictions happened one night after we had visited one of my co-workers and her husband at their new home in another county. As I was backing out of their driveway, my mother suddenly said, "There's going to be a murder! We're not coming back here!" Over a year later, my co-worker came to visit us one afternoon and mentioned a murder at her home. About seven months after our visit, her husband decided to move his uncle and a nephew into another house on his property. A few weeks later, those two had an argument during which the uncle shot and killed the nephew.
