"Goodbye Porkpie Hat" by Charles Mingus.
Don't be fooled by the funny sounding name. It's an instrumental jazz piece written for a dead friend of Mr. Mingus. It has one of the most harrowing and melancholy melodies ever written. It is very down tempo and reflective. I think it would be perfect for a slideshow. And I guarantee you it expresses the emotions you want it to better than any words ever could. Music with words just ruin something like that. Listen to this piece.

Gregory and the Hawk, My Chemical Romance(Ghost of You would probably be the best choice), Sigur Ros, Hurt by Nine Inch Nails, or Johnny Cash, the Johnny Cash version is more thought out and more melodic, I would choose that one.

I am sorry for the loss of your friend. "Bright Eyes" from Art Garfunkel is a beautiful song about mortality that always makes me cry. Here's what it sounds like:

grab a copy of Disintegration from THE CURE. Pictures of You would probably be appropriate.
