Murderball - About wheelchair rugby. One of the best I've seen in years.
Devil's Playground - About the Amish tradition of Rumspringa (where the teens spend a year or more outside of the community.
Spellbound - About the national spelling bee
American Movie - About 5 different people and their unusual homes... sounds less than exciting I know but it's incredibly funny and insightful.
(BTW... "Thank you for Smoking" isn't a documentary)
I could give you a long list if you'd like, just send me an email.

Dust To Glory
Roger & Me (Micheal Moore, but this is economic and not political)
No Direction Home: Bob Dylan
Festival Express (interesting page of rock & roll history, even if the performers sugar coat their recollections of events).

It's a bit hard to find, but American Experience did The Huey Long Story some time ago. While it's not as currently impressive as the shockumentaries, it does go into the back world of corruption in state politics. Seeing a single man capable of pocketing tax money while rallying followers with complaints about the way politicians treat you is always absorbing.

super size me, or better yet An Inconvenient Truth, which a power point full of graphs narrated by Al Gore, I know, sounds boring, but it is very compelling. After that just turn on PBS, full of documentaries that are about everything and anything, some controversial, some just informative.

Well, I'm not sure how it could be termed "controversial", but I did see the penguin documentary March of the Penguins. I thought it was surprisingly good, especially given the benign subject matter.

I hate michael moore. Im not a democrat or avid supporter or al gore, and i know this movie may seem over rated, but it is well worth it. Watch "An inconvenient truth". Its a shocker, definitely. Its very factual, which i usually dont like, but everything is well explained. I know global warming is so cliche, but a lot of people dont even really understand it. this movie explains it all. just give it a try.

SuperSize Me. After watching it, I didn't eat at McDonalds for a couple of months. It had a lasting impact on me because I don't really eat there as often anymore.
