Just wanted to know if it is common for someone to take over my computer while I am working on it. For the last few weeks, strange things have been going on while I have been on here. As I am looking at a web page, another one will pop up and an address will be typing in the address bar routing me to another page. I have went to my email accounts and noticed that emails were opened that I have not read. The latest is a charge on my CC to a internet web site that I have never been to. I am hoping that I have it fixed now, now I am just paranoid. Can anyone tell me anything about this type of inncident or what I can do to feel secure using the internet more frequently.

Scan your computer with the best anti-spyware program available. A new version of CounterSpy has just been released which runs rings around any other anti-spyware. You can get a free trial and I highly recommend you do it.

Yes It is called a drive by hijack

To remove the hijack
(1) Get you self a good antivirus or a free one .
(2) If you have not already scanned your comp with spybot do that now .
(3) Do an online virus scan to check if you still have any other viruses in your computer. And let us know if the online virus scan still finds any virus or spyware .

To prevent it

1a) Install and use firefox while browsing

1b) Install Adblock a content filtering plug-in for the Mozilla and Firebird browsers.

2) Install and run spywareblaster
# Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted software.
# Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
# Restrict the actions of potentially unwanted sites in Internet Explorer.

The best thing to do, is to clean your Cookies and delete temporary Internet Files. To do so, open Internerd Explorer (yes, Internerd, just for the not so computer savvy, more to come), go to Tools, Internet Options and click on Delete Cookies, then on Delete Temporary Internet Files. You may also want to check on some other files on your computer, but the best thing to do is to try to stay away from Internet Explorer as much as possible and use Mozilla Firefox (www.mozilla.com) as your browser, for example. Keep your antivirus up to date. A good antivirus is AVG and it is free, too, the page for it is free.grisoft.com
