In pH, p stands for potenz (power) n H stands for hydrogen. This concept of representing H+(aq.) ions was 1st introduced by a Danish scientist Sorenson in 1909. It is now known as the pH scale.

pH of a sol. = -log [H+(aq.)] ions.

it is just a value that describes the amount of acidity in terms of concentration of hydronium ion

pH= -log of hydronium ion concentration

p is just a mathematical function of logarithm that is used commonly in chemistry
