i live in Northwest Ohio, and all the schools in my area are CLOSED!!

2 of my brothers whom are still in school, are saying "well with the wind chill its like 20 below...which its not....

i go outside...i'm like 'you call this cold?' it honestly isn't that cold...maybe some people can't handle it....but i'm fine.

its not because of snow or anything...we have snow..but the roads are fine.

It's partly that it is too cold to walk or wait for the bus. However, the bigger problem is that some of the parents don't get proper cold weather gear for their children usually because they can't always afford it. Also, some parents aren't home to supervise the kids getting off to school, and you would be amazed at the number of kids at my school who wear shorts in all sorts of weather.

The truth is this. Schools close due to cold more than to snow. If the windchill is dangerous , meaning that being outside more than a few minutes causes frostbite. Little kids can not be exposed that long. In this day and age of bussing some kids would be on those bus stops much longer than is safe. Moms and dads rarely take their kids to school. Kids are notorious for loosing caps and mittens or being "too cool" to wear them. These same parents will sue the district for endangering their childs health and will win. Talk to the lawyers on this one.

Well, In Summer School it is dangerous to have kids do P.E. If the heat is over 100%. This means all the kids sit around inside air conditioning. I am wondering if they close the school for cold, why do the schools make the kids go when there are heat waves. That seems a lot more dangerous then cold weather? I mean do we not have heaters at schools? They have no problem turning up the air conditioner and forcing those kids to walk to and from school, in what at times where we live can hit 120% I like this question and I think it deserved my full attention in answering.
Thanks for the venting moment,

Well, sometimes it seems like it would make sense to cancel school because of cold weather. I live in the Chicago area, and this morning (Feb 5) the temperature was -9'F, with a windchill of -28'F. Many school districts canceled school (mine didn't unfortunately), and I don't think kids should've had to wait outside for the bus this morning. Some kids are goofy and don't dress appropriately for the weather...I'm mostly talking about junior highers. And what if the bus is running late for whatever reason?

The only time they closed school when i was a kid was if the boilers broke or it snowed up to your ***. I walked to school everyday until high school. Kids are pu$$ies today. I grew up in Boston where it got down to -20 or -30, and they never called off school.

CNN had a guy in Chicago this morning like they were having a weather emergency, or something. It was -26 with the wind chill. IT'S CHICAGO, FOR CHRIST'S SAKE! IT GETS COLD IN FEBRUARY IN CHICAGO! SO WHAT?

Uhm - you think its ridiculous that its dangerous for ALL of the children to make it to school?? Most kids get a ride? Are you sure?? From their parents are the school bus?? Those who ride the school bus are out there bundled up in the freezing weather waiting for a ride to school and could get hurt because of the extreme cold.... Did you ever think of that??? So who should come to school on these days exactly? Kids that get rides from their parents and the rest stay home?? Kinda makes for a small outcome for the school day - don't you think? You have to think about everyone..

Some of the temps are -20 below zero...If you have any exposed skin you can get frost bite in 5 minutes...Its a good idea to close schools, especially since kids have to wait at bus stops in this frigid weather... They never closed schools when I was a kid either, but they probably should have...

I have a school-aged son, and I am in favor of schools closing for extreme cold. No, they didn't do it when I was a kid either! But in my neighborhood there are kids out standing at the bus stops before dawn, for 15-20 minutes. Kids aren't adults who HAVE to get to work. They're kids. If it's cold enough that I wouldn't send them out to play, why would I send them out to stand around waiting for a bus?

its more than just legal worries... children are very weak compared to the below zero windchills. Skin tissue can become frost bitten, colds can be caught (and everyone knows once one kid gets a cold, the whole school gets it!), and buses traveling over icy pavement can be very dangerous...

we must look out for these kids!

(another downside of this cold weather is that the heating systems in public schools rarely blow out warm air, unless its the summer)

but i guess suing is a big issue too.

You know what? Some people are just wimps. If it's cold outside, they should bundle up their kids. It's that simple! Sure, it involves a few extra minutes of de-bundling, but an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Plus, if u ever visit COLORADO, get prepared for the cold.
