Hello Again...
I was wondering this time if anyone knows where to get a copy of the home video of the musical Phantom of the Opera "The Opera".
I know they have one for "Cats", and "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat", and also for "Jesus Christ Superstar", all of which are the entire Opera, on a video (Usually VHS) just for you. You see, I am one of the unfortunate souls who wasn't alive in the 1980's, so I missed the show in it's prime. (I'm only 16). I have the CD, and I can play every song, and just about the entire score on piano, including the parts, where they're just talking, melodically, of course. I am dying to see it in front of me, in action. I would just go to see the Opera, but it wouldn't be satisfying enough, for I would miss the presence of mostly Mr. Michael Crawford, but also the rest of the cast. So the only possible way to see it for myself is to invent a time machine, or find a recorded version. This way seems alot easier. Please help... Thank you...

Hi!
The original cast plays might be a bit hard to find because of when they where released. However I HAVE seen TV specials about the Phantom where they show clips of a young Sarah Brightman rehearsing, and then bits of the play. I assume there MUST be a complete video.
Specifically about the Phantom, they did release video clips of the songs with Brightman and Crawford. I remember them being played over and over TV channels like THE BOX (maybe you're also too young to remember that!), but they do exist!

I checked YouTube a bit and found several. Here's the clip of Music of the night: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hqKuKqmcMIk
I know it's not the same as the actual play, but it's a start with the stars YOU want!
And.... by the way... you are totally right: nothing beats the original casts! It's really refreshing to find a 16 year old with "historical" knowledge, so to speak!

Here are a few more clips that might be helpful:

- PHANTOM OF THE OPERA: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=91yljzAC6Nw
- MUSIC OF THE NIGHT: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hqKuKqmcMIk

Man! Just check You Tube! You'll go nuts!
Goodluck! ;)

There sadly wasn't an official recording of the original trio of Michael Crawford, Sarah Brightman, and Steve Barton. However, if you're looking for a recording of the stage show, the closest you'll get to the real thing will be the 25th anniversary DVD with Ramin Karimloo, Sierra Boggess, and Hadley Fraser. It was at the Royal Albert Hall, and some things were cut out and/or made different, but it's pretty close to the original.

A.L.W. is one of my all time faves, and I have copies of every musical he ever produced. Have to gone direct to the source? OR Amazon?

BTW,,, CATS on DVD is the UK touring cast.
